Wal-Mart is putting a lot of force behind it’s recent bid to open not one, but two new Supercenters in Illinois, in order to create hundreds of new retail jobs in Chicago.
Wal-Mart wants to open a Wal-Mart Supercenter proposed in the empty lot in the Chatham neighborhood next to the Dan Ryan Expressway. That store, which would create hundreds of union construction jobs and hundreds of ongoing retail sales jobs, has been stalled by the City Council Finance Committee at the behest of organized labor.
The ambitious company is also planning on building a store in an empty lot between 103rd and 111th streets next to the Bishop Ford Freeway. Wal-Mart is the critical element in an ambitious development called Pullman Park, which would bring thousands of jobs to the Far South Side.

And it would do so much more. This neighborhood is beyond a food desert. Heck, it’s a flat-out retail desert. “We don’t have a place to buy lunch or even a pair of socks,” said David Doig, president of Park Bank Initiatives, a nonprofit community development group focused on low- and moderate-income Chicago neighborhoods. It’s owned by U.S. Bank, which has committed financing for Pullman Park. “Without Wal-Mart, this doesn’t happen,” Doig told us. “Wal-Mart drives the traffic that drives the other retail development.”
The project’s backers weren’t eager to take on the political headaches that come from aligning with Wal-Mart in Chicago. They approached other retailers to anchor Pullman Park — Jewel, Dominick’s, Costco, Target, Ikea. “They all said no thanks,” Doig said.
Wal-Mart said yes.
It’s outrageous enough that the aldermen have sat on the Chatham development that would include Wal-Mart. Pullman Park ups the stakes. It’s an even larger project, with even more jobs at stake.
